Best Itinerary for First Time River Cruisers

5/5/2026

With dozens of itineraries across Europe's most iconic waterways, plus others in more exotic locations, the options can feel overwhelming. The good news is that for most first time river cruisers, the answer comes down to two rivers: the Danube and the Rhine. Both are exceptional. Both will leave you wanting more. But they offer slightly different experiences, and knowing which one suits you best makes all the difference.
Reasons to select the Danube for your first river cruise
If you ask me to choose one itinerary for a first time river cruiser, I will almost always point you toward the Danube. The ports are exceptional and remarkably accessible. In Budapest and Bratislava, your ship docks right in the heart of the city. You walk off the gangway and you are already there; no motor coaches, no long transfers, no losing half your day to logistics. Vienna requires a short motor coach ride but remains one of the most rewarding and effortlessly navigable cities in Europe once you arrive. For a first time river cruiser, this kind of direct and uncomplicated access to some of Europe's most extraordinary cities is one of the Danube's greatest strengths.

In between Budapest and Vienna, the Danube takes you through the Wachau Valley, one of Europe's most breathtaking stretches of river, lined with vineyards, medieval villages, and hilltop castles. A visit to Melk Abbey, a Baroque masterpiece perched above the river, is consistently one of the highlights my clients mention when they return. The Danube also tends to feel slightly more intimate and unhurried than the Rhine, with a romantic Old World atmosphere that suits the pace of a first river cruise beautifully.
AmaWaterways' Best of the Danube is one of my favorite itineraries and an excellent starting point. The Celebration of Music themed departures add an extraordinary cultural layer for travelers with a passion for classical music, with exclusive performances and excursions in Vienna and Budapest that are unlike anything available on a standard sailing.

When the Rhine Might Be the Better Choice
The Rhine is not a consolation prize; it is a spectacular river with its own compelling case for first timers!
If Amsterdam is high on your bucket list, the Rhine is for you. Sailing from Amsterdam through the Netherlands, Germany, and into France and Switzerland, the Rhine offers a different flavor of Europe with vibrant cities, dramatic castle gorges, world class wine regions, and the kind of scenery that makes you reach for your camera every few minutes.
The Rhine is also the home of Christmas Markets river cruising, and if a festive December sailing through twinkling European villages sounds like your idea of a perfect first cruise, the Rhine wins that conversation easily.
For active travelers, the Rhine's cycling routes are among the best in European river cruising, with biking excursions through the Dutch countryside and along the dramatic Rhine Gorge.
Whichever river you choose, a few principles apply universally for first timers. Book early! The best cabins and most desirable departure dates fill up 12 to 18 months in advance. Build in at least one extra day at your embarkation city to arrive relaxed and ready. And choose a line whose style matches yours, if you want to understand the differences between AmaWaterways, Viking, Tauck, and Avalon, I have written about that elsewhere and am always happy to walk you through the comparison personally.
Your first river cruise will almost certainly not be your last. The question is simply which river starts the journey.

Let's find the right one for you!
