The world of travel is constantly evolving, and with 2023 bringing new advancements in security and technology, it's important to stay informed about the latest regulations and processes. One new program, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for the UK, has already been implemented, while 2 more programs, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and and the Entry-Exit System (EES) for the European Union are expected to come soon.

Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time adventurer, navigating these new programs can seem daunting, especially when the acronyms are all so similar! I am here to provide you with a clear understanding of what these programs entail and how they will impact your future travels.

Below I've outlined each program, including who needs them, their application process, cost, and processing times.
  1. ETA or Electronic Travel Authorization - went into effect January 8, 2025
Who Needs It: All guests visiting or changing planes or airports in the UK. Everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children.
    Cost: £10 (approx. $12 USD)
Processing Time: 3 business days (clients are getting it almost immediately right now, but it could take up to 3 days, apply early)
    How to Apply:
    • Download the UK ETA app.
    • Your must have a passport, email access, and a credit/debit card ready.
    • Secure the ETA promptly to avoid denied boarding and ensure a smooth start to your adventure.
  2. ETIAS or European Travel Information and Authorization System - coming soon
Who Needs It: U.S. citizens traveling to the Schengen Area for tourism, business, or transit for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period.
Cost: €7 for people between 18 to 70 years old
    Processing Time: Within minutes.
How to Apply: Application is not live yet but you can sign up for alerts here.

  3. EES or Entry-Exit System - using biometrics to replace stamping passports -coming soon
Who Needs It: US travelers to Europe (certain countries but most that I plan travel to)
    Cost: no cost
    Processing Time: Within minutes
How to Apply: Obtain at the border, you'll need to create a digital record on your first visit to the Schengen area.
